While waiting to see the dentist, the following are useful instructions for dental emergencies

Broken, chipped or cracked tooth

Rinse your mouth with warm water to clean the affected area and prevent infection. Wrap an ice pack in a soft hand towel and place it on the area. Take any pieces of tooth and gently rinse with warm water. Place the tooth fragment in a wet gauze or towel and bring it with you to the dentist.

Lost filling or crown

Wrap an ice pack in a soft hand towel and place it on the affected area. If you found the missing filling or crown, rinse it in warm water to ensure it’s kept clean. Place it in a sealed bag and bring it with you when seeing the dentist. Tooth wax can be used to cover the hole in the interim but do not use any household adhesives in your mouth.

Possible broken jaw

Do not move your jaw. Wrap an ice pack in a soft hand towel and place it on the affected area, in order to minimise swelling. See your dentist or a medical clinic immediately.

What to take for pain?

Do not take aspirin if you are experiencing a dental emergency. Aspirin is an anticoagulant and can therefore cause excessive bleeding. We recommend taking paracetamol to control pain. Once examined, the dentist will advise as to the appropriate medication required.

It is important to remember that injuries to teeth and gums can result in infection and other secondary problems, therefore it’s important to schedule an appointment promptly.
