Inlays are fillings that were traditionally made from gold but now can be made from porcelain, ceramic or composite. They are used to repair back teeth that have experienced moderate damage. Because your back teeth are generally used for grinding and chewing, the inlays are very strong to withstand the pressure associated with eating. Once made, the inlay piece is glued into your teeth within the cusp tips, i.e. the entire inlay piece sits inside the perimeter of the tooth’s cusps.
Similar to inlays, onlays are made from the same material but are used to treat more extensively damaged back teeth. Once glued in, onlays sit on the cusps of the tooth. Onlays are actually much stronger than any other fillings and will increase the strength of the tooth.
Pyrmont Dental Health can create your inlay and onlay filling piece in our very own practice while you wait. Our CEREC machine will mill out the piece from a ceramic block once a digital image is taken of your tooth. The entire process can be completed within one visit and the result is outstanding.
